Chennai

Chennai - (formerly known as Madras) is the gateway to Southern India and the largest city in southern India located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, developed after 1639 when the British East India Company established a fort and trading post at the small fishing village of Chennai. It is the capital city of Tamilnadu state. This coastal center of trade has drawn traffic from all over the world for centuries and maintains a cosmopolitan quality as well as a Tamil air. The center of South India's film industry, its skyline is ablaze with bright movie billboards advertising the latest celluloid fantasies.

Egmore Museum

Located on Pantheon Road, Egmore this is home to one of the finest bronze collections in the world. This renowned museum exhibits a variety of arms, rare coins, vintage stamps, antiques, and musical instruments.

Valluvar Kottam

The Valluvar Kottam established in 1976, on the corner of Kodambakkam High Road and Village Road, honors the acclaimed Tamil Poet, Thiruvalluvar, whose classic work, the Kural, is reputed to be about 2000 years old. The shrine is designed like the temple car of Thiruvarur.

Childrens park

Situated on Sardar Patel Road in Chennai, the park has a large number of antelopes, jackals, spotted deers and different kinds of monkeys. The main attractions of the Park are the elephant and pony rides. This huge park, with spotted deers, peacocks, etc., has playgrounds, slides and swings for the kids. It also has a sizeable collection of birds.

Snake Park

Adjacent Childrens' park is the interesting snake park housing a vast variety of reptiles, ranging from the dark deadley 'King Cobra' 'Banded' Krait' to puff adders', vipers, pythons and allegators.

Marina Beach

The stretch of beach known as the Marina extends for 13 kms. and is claimed to be the second largest in the world. It is bordered by gardens and is a major tourist attraction. The Memorials such as Anna Samadhi, MG R Samadhi are located on the sea front. This section of the beach road is known as Anna Square. Golden sand, good surf and a shimmering clean blue sea, this in a nutshell, is Marina beach. This beach is counted among one of the longest beaches in Asia. It stretches from the Harbour to the Santhome Cathedral. Its long stretch was made beautiful by the wonderful facelift given by Governor Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant Duff in the early 1880's. Watching the sun set and rise from the beach is an enthralling experience. Though bathing and swimming can be dangerous, as the undercurrent is very strong, people come here for swimming. In the evenings, the beach is virtually a fair ground with various kinds of entertainment and food stalls lining the beach.

Anna Square

The mortal remains of Dr. C.N. Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu was buried at the Anna Square, which is at the northern end of the Marina Beach.

MGR Memorial

Overlooking the Madras University on the sands of Marina adjacent to Anna Square lies the grand memorial of M.G.Ramachandran, the matinee idol - turned - Chief Minister.
